Opinions around the country, Saturday, Feb. 18

Since I’m unsure if soggy Santa Anita will even run on Saturday, and if it does there certainly won’t be any turf races even though three are carded, I will look at some stakes races around the country.

Aqueduct (Broadway Stakes): It’s going to be tough to beat #6 Hot City Girl (6-5). If you are looking for an exacta partner, you might try the 15-1 Splendid Gold (#7).

Gulfstream Park (Grade II Royal Delta): It was a shame the mare this race was named after died recently. She was a great one. Again the favorites #5 Eskenformoney (8-5) and #2 Curlin’s Approval (7-5) will be tough to beat. A long shot to check out is #3 Mo’ Green (6-1) with Johnny Velazquez aboard.

Gulfstream Park (White Pearl): #2 Mines and Magic (4-1) will be tough with Joe Rosario. A real bomber to consider is #3 Savingtime (20-1). The GP main track has been deeper this week while the turf course has been playing to speed because of … a lack of rain. They certainly can have ours if they want it.

Laurel Park (Grade II Barbara Fritchie): Laurel will offer six stakes on the card, starting with the fifth race, but highlights are the last two, including this one for fillies and mares. These are tough races because the local horses would appear to have an edge but then you have shippers from other parts and jockeys coming in to ride and they don’t want to waste time or money. #3 By the Moon (2-1) and #1 High Ridge Road (5-2) are the pair to beat, but look out for the likes of #2 Rowd E Allie (20-1), #6 Takrees (6-1) and #7 Clothes Fall Off (8-1).

Laurel Park (Grade III General George): Ortiz has the horse to watch here in #6 Stallwalkin’ Dude (5-2) but #5 Imperial Hint (3-1) and local favorite #3 Page McKenney (7-2) can’t be ignored. Look for a price? Try #9 Heaven’s Runaway (6-1).

Oaklawn Park (Grade III Bayakoa): Boy, did I enjoy watching Bayakoa run back in the day. She was something to behold. In this race I think #1 Steel Cut (8-1) has a big shot from the inside. She will have to beat the likes of #2 Terra Promessa (6-5), #5 Streamline (4-1) and #7 Ready to Confess (9-2).
