Horse racing, Tampa Bay Downs

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Thursday, Feb. 16

Preview: I had a pair of fourths and a scratch on Wednesday. I really hate fourth-place finishes because it means your handicapping wasn’t that far off but you just couldn’t at least get in the top three. Sometimes I wonder if it isn’t better to just finish last. Then you know did a crappy job. These five-day a week cards aren’t best, but it will just be for this month. There was a brief shower during Wednesday’s card, but it looks OK for the next couple of days. The weekend is another story.

Race 3 – Tam
#2 Who’s Jack (8-1) ****
Our Eyes: Leading jockey Daniel Centeno keeps the mount on this colt, which appears to be trying two turns for the first time. Trainer Gary Jackson is 26% when having a horse sprint-sprint-route.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 8 units to show.

Race 5 – Tam
#7 Belle Postiere (4-1) ****
Our Eyes: This filly will be running for third different trainer in her third race. Trainer Teresa Connelly is 21% with horses the first time in her barn and jockey Pablo Morales is 25% with Connelly. Worth a shot.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 8 units to show.

Race 9 – Tam
#3 Take A Deep Breath (3-1) ****
Our Eyes: Trainer Tom Proctor has had a huge meet (12 for 27) and he gets this filly to run first time in the U.S. The 3-year-old finished second in a Grade III. Proctor is 21% with horses the first time in his care. Jockey Ronnie Allen Jr. is 8 for 16 with Proctor at the meet.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Good luck.
