Horse racing, Santa Anita

Santa Anita opinions for Thursday, Feb. 16

Preview: This likely will be the only day of the week for grass racing. Arcadia is suppose get hit late Thursday night/early Friday morning with 3 inches of rain which could mean the entire card on Friday might be in question, but we’ll have to wait and see on Friday. The early part of today’s card doesn’t look very appealing so look to later on the card.

Race 4 – SA
#5 Princess Leia (5-1) ****
Our Eyes: Leading jockey Flavien Prat could have ridden another in this race but he rides this 3-year-old daughter of Awesome Again out of an A. P. Indy mare, which screams two turns and this is first try at a mile.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 5 – SA
#9 Hot Smoke (3-1) ****
Our Eyes: This gelding has been running in Cal-bred stakes company and drops back to an allowance. This is his first try on turf, but being a son of Unusual Heat that shouldn’t be an issue. Trainer Robertino Diodoro also puts blinkers on here.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 8 – SA
#3 Doc Curlin (6-1) ****
Our Eyes: Looks like trainer Kristin Mulhall got this gelding privately from Florida. This could be a prep for a longer race or a race to see if he likes running down the hill. There are a couple of bullet works showing so he looks like he is ready to go for jockey Mario Gutierrez.
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Good luck.
