Horse racing, Santa Anita

Santa Anita opinions for Monday, Jan. 2

Jeff Nahill’s SA Preview: Rain was due to hit Arcadia again over night so there is no telling what Santa Anita will do with the turf races. Sepeed was good on the sloppy main track on Sunday. Nice to see Corey Nakatani back in the winner’s circle on Saturday.

Race 2 – SA
#5 Smarty Party Papa (3-1) ****
Our Eyes: I think trainer Terry Knight plans on running more in Southern California and if he does, he’s one to watch. This gelding drops into a maiden claimer for the first time and puts blinkers on. Look for a better effort here. – Jeff Nahill
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 4 – SA
#10 Bona Fide Image (4-1) ***
Our Eyes: The only thing not making this a stronger play is the outside draw, but other than that this filly drops to her lowest claiming level ever and trainer Bill Spawr has been red hot. – Jeff Nahill
Jeff’s Playbook: 3 units to win, 4 units to place and 6 units to show.

Race 7 – SA
#6 Matriculate (9-2) ****
Our Eyes: Trainer Bill Spawr has two in this race (Boy Howdy, 10-1, is the other) but we’ll go with this gelding as Spawr is 39% going from a route to a sprint race. – Jeff Nahill
Jeff’s Playbook: 4 units to win, 5 units to place and 6 units to show.

Good luck.
