Del Mar selections for Sunday, November 12

Preview: Looks like jockey Rafael Bejarano missed opening day on Friday with a hand injury and he begins serving a three-day suspension today. Word is now that Bejarano won’t return to riding until Nov. 26 to allow his hand to heal and serve two, three-day suspensions.

Race 1: 1. #7 Smuggler Union (5-1), 2. Williston Dude, 3. My Prince Harry. LONG SHOT: Is Trevor Clever.
Our Eyes: When a top jockey rides for a small barn, it’s time to take notice. Such is the case here as jockey Flavien Prat rides this gelding for trainer Howard Zucker, who is 21% second off the layoff.

Race 2: 1. Dame Street, 2. Space Cadet, 3. Brookes All Mine. LONG SHOT: Plastered.

Race 3: 1. #7 Woodfox (4-1), 2. Iron Curtain, 3. Coils Gold. LONG SHOT: Thankful Every Day.
Alexis Barba hasn’t started many horses this year but she knows how to train. Jockey Kent Desormeaux takes the ride on this 2-year-old and he usually wakes a horse the first time he rides. This son of Dixie Chatter has early speed so we’ll see what Desormeaux decides to do.

Race 4: 1. Spirit World, 2. Seattle Boom, 3. Redneck Crazy. LONG SHOT: Ring Collector.

Race 5: 1. Serbian Syclone, 2. Rangi, 3. Chips All In. LONG SHOT: Sudden Sam.

Race 6: 1. #2 Bar Scene (5-1), 2. Wanda’s Touch, 3. No Name Just Fame. LONG SHOT: To B. Ava.
Trainer Kory Owens is 0-for-9 with first-timers, but he has won plenty in the past. This filly is sired by Rocky Bar, who gets 18% winners first-time out. Rocky Bar is a speed sire and this 3-year-old has been tearing up the track in the mornings.

Race 7:  1. Dyanmic Mizzes K, 2. Untouchable U, 3. Shazara. LONG SHOT: Mrs. Norris.

Race 8: 1. Enola Gray, 2. Barbara Beatrice, 3. Chao Chom. LONG SHOT: Harlington’s Rose.

Race 9: 1. #2 Colonel Samsen (8-1) BEST BET, 2. Kona Dreams 3. Kimbear. LONG SHOT: South Americain.
This 2-year-old ran as a maiden in a stakes race last time and now drops back into a MSW. Jockey Drayden Van Dyke knows how to ride the turf course and this son of Colonel John should relish the extra distance.

Good luck.
