Preview: Less than a week left until the Breeders’ Cup. The turf rails will be at 30 feet today so don’t look for a lot of passing in the lane with speed being a key.
Race 1: #1 Kona Dreams (9-2) (turf only)
This is a tough one to figure out and I know I’m taking a shot here because trainer George Papaprodromou is 0-for-44 with first-time starters, but thing thing that keeps bugging me is why would leading rider Rafel Bejarano jump on unless this 2-year-old has a big shot? The sire Midshipman gets 13% first time grass winners.
Race 6: #1 Uninvited (5-2)
After 11 races in MSW company, trainer Bob Baffert drops this 3-year-old into a maiden claimer for the first time. Baffert is 27% in this situation and 23% third time off the layoff. Jockey Rafael Bejarano keeps the mount.
Race 8 – SA
#5 Drummer (6-1) (turf only)
Like the first race, I’m taking a shot here. Trainer Neil Drysdale is 17% the first time he gets a horse and this 4-year-old is making his first start in the States after running in graded company in Germany. He won 5 times last year but is 0-for-7 this year. Jockey Kent Desormeaux jumps on and he rides the turf as well as anyone.
Race 9: #2 Profound Visionary (4-1)
There is a lot to like about this gelding, which is making its first start around two turns in more than a year. Maybe that’s the reason trainer Robertino Diodoro claimed him last time out. Diodoro is 21% first off the claim and 37% when moving a horse up two or more class levels. Jockey Tyler Baze is 23% with Diodoro.
Good luck.
