Horse racing, Santa Anita

Santa Anita opinions for Sunday, Oct. 16

Preview: Trainer Phil D’Amato was the king of the grass last spring here, but he was off to an 1-for-19 start on the green at this meet. Doug O’Neill started 0-for-17. No trainer has really taken control on the turf as Peter Eurton, Carla Gaines, Peter Miller, Richard Baltas and Mike Puype all had two wins at the start of racing on Friday. One thing to keep in mind this weekend is that superb grass rider Flavien Prat is riding elsewhere this weekend.

Race 1: #1 Lily Kai (7-2): Big jock switch here in my mind as Rafael Bejarano takes over for Drayden Van Dyke, who hasn’t been riding well of late. Bejarano was aboard this filly when she broke her maiden here at Santa Anita and he is 38% with trainer Mike Machowsky.

Race 6: #2 Anthonysgotgame (20-1): This gelding has been away since July but trainer Paul Aguirre is 37% with horses off a layoff of 90 days or more. Aguirre tried to get this 4-year-old on this turf course last winter but it was rained off. He must like this spot because he is moving the 4-year-old up in class.

Race 9: #8 Special Gal (6-1): This filly was favored at Del Mar going two turns but she finished fourth for Phil D’Amato. Jockey Rafael Bejarano is 31% with D’Amato, who is 26% with beaten favorites.

Good luck.
