Horse racing, Santa Anita

Santa Anita opinions for Sunday, July 3

Preview: The largest field and best race of the day is the final race on the program, the $75,000 Southern Truce. Trainers to think twice about on the dirt are George Papaprodromou,, who is 1-for-22, Ron Ellis (2-17), Eric Kruljac (1-16), Javier Sierra (1-14) and Mike Pender (0-13). Hope some of you had Saturday’s $20 winner from the Doug O’Neill barn.

Race 2 – SA
#6 Tattooed Kitty (5-2): Trainer Peter Miller is a wizard with debuting maiden claimers like this daughter of Wildcat Heir (15% winners first time out) with a 25% win rate. He puts good speed jockey Martin Pedroza aboard and they are 18% at Santa Anita.

Race 5 – SA
#5 Ya Antabttsy (9-2): Trainer Roberto Diodoro does well in all categories at whatever track he runs at. In this 3-year-old maiden claimer he has gelded the horse since he took over the training and he puts jockey Jaime Theriot aboard. Theriot is looking for his first win in SoCal after riding in the Midwest and South for many years.

Race 6 – SA
#2 Dive Down (5-2): Look to me like trainer Roberto Diodoro is trying real hard to get jockey Jamie Theriot his first Southern California win today. Diodoro claimed this gelding last time out and keeps him at the same level. Diodoro is 23% first off the claim and 27% with beaten favorites.

Race 8 – SA
#6 Apollo Ten (12-1): This gelding was claimed last time out by trainer Keith Craigmyle, who is 23% first off the claim. The 7-year-old is coming out of a key that has produced two next out winners in Thanksgiving Day and Hawk’s Eyes. Jockey Drayden Van Dyke jumps on.
