Horse racing, Santa Anita

Santa Anita opinions for Saturday, July 2

Race 4: #2 Sizzlin Square (6-1): Square Eddie is among the best California sire as his offspring with first out at a 15% rate. This is a homebred from Reddma Racing and thus in the barn of trainer Doug O’Neill and will be ridden by Mario Gutierrez and they are a 21% combination. There is a workout three back that seems to show this 2-year-old’s readiness.

Race 6: #1 Little Mustard (5-2): This gelding just finished second at this level while pressing the pace. Trainer Peter Eurton is 26% with beaten favorites and 27% with jockey Rafael Bejarano.

Race 7: #1 Where’s Bubba (8-1): Trainer Bill Spawr is a sparkling 41% when he moves a horse from a route race to a sprint like he is doing with this gelding. The 4-year-old has a record of 4-1-1-2 at 7 furlongs so an across the board bet might be the way to go.

Race 9: #2 Qatar’s Pearl (20-1): Trainer David Bernstein is 20% with horses coming off a 31 to 60-day layoff like this gelding. More important for me is the fact that this 7-year-old is coming out of a key race that has produced two winners already. Here’s hoping for three at big odds.

Good luck.
