Horse racing, Santa Anita

Santa Anita opinions for Sunday, May 8

Preview: The first week of the spring/summer meet ends with a good card that features the return of the fabulous mare, Beholder. She is a single in the Grade II Adoration so work your bets around her and hope for some bombs.

Race 1 – SA
#10 Summer Wine: This filly has been away since last summer’s Del Mar meeting but she took to the grass in her first start at Golden Gate. Trainer William Morey is 29% with horses off a 90-plus-day layoff and 27% with beaten favorites. Outside is a good place to be down the hill so jockey Gary Stevens should be able to pounce when he wants.

Race 4 – SA
#4 Bombard: This colt ran pretty good in his debut to finish third considering all the trouble he had down the hill. Trainer Richard Mandella, who is 38% with horses making their second grass start, stretches the son of War Front out and he should love it. Jockey Flavien Prat has been in the money nine of the last 10 times he has ridden for Mandella.
