Horse racing, Santa Anita

Santa Anita opinions for Saturday, May 7

Preview: Derby Day brings a decent 11-race card. Later on the card is better as I don’t see the Pick 5 paying a lot as there should be several odds-on favorites that will be tough to beat in the sequence. Who knows how Friday’s rain will affect the turf races. If Santa Anita can find a way to screw it up, it will. Taking races off the turf late isn’t fair to bettors!!!

Race 4 – SA
#8 Dorothyroseblanche: Just throw out that debut for this filly as she got squeezed at the start and didn’t do a lot of running. Trainers Phil D’Amato is 28% when dropping from MSW to maiden claiming and 32% with all maiden claimers.

Race 9 – SA
#9 Stays in Vegas TURF ONLY: This filly has only lost twice in six races (once to Songbird) and is a perfect 2-for-2 on the turf. She has been away since December, but trainer Jerry Hollendorfer is 20% with horses off a 90 plus-day layoff and he’s 23% with jockey Alex Solis.

Race 11 – SA
#9 Kiss At Midnight TURF ONLY: Trainer Richard Baltas is 35% with beaten favorites and this filly showed some promise in her only turf start, finishing second. Baltas is 27% going dirt to turf and he’s 29% with jockey Rafael Bejarano.
