Horse racing, Tampa Bay Downs

Tampa Bay Downs opinions for Saturday, Jan. 16

Preview: Pretty good card as the first race, with just seven horses, is the smallest field. There are three turf races and here are some jockeys you might think about not betting on the green stuff here this winter: Keiber Coa (0-for-17), Erick Rodriguez (0-14), Huber Villa-Gomez (0-13), Inoel Beato (0-13), Pablo Morales (1-27), Victor Lebron (1-21) and Dean Butler (1-18).

Race 3: #2 Affect (8-1)

This filly hasn’t lived up to her breeding (by Bernardini) but trainer Eoin Harty is starting over with a dirt sprint. She showed speed on turf last time and hopefully shows it again.

==

Race 6:  #3 Cactus Kid (6-1)

Trainer William Downing has had a slow meet (0-for-4) but he picks up a live one here from Gulfstream Park. Downing is 22% with shippers and 18% with horses first time in his care. This one comes out of a key race that has produced two next out winners.

==

Race 7: #10 Pop Rocks Lady (turf only) (9-2)

This filly finished third over  soft turf course at Laurel two months ago for trainer Graham Motion, who is 20% with horses off a 46-90-day layoff. The daughter of Sidney’s Candy should appreciate the drop in class but must negotiate a trip from the outside post.
