Horse racing, Santa Anita

Santa Anita picks for Thursday, Jan. 9

Sunday was just one of those days when I didn’t handicap all that bad, and in fact pretty good, but wasn’t around to do anything about it as my girlfriend was in the emergency room so I watched all of the Chargers’ game and the first quarter of the 49ers’ game from there. And only caught the final minutes of the Aztecs’ basketball win over Kansas.

At Santa Anita, my 35-1 long shot Lyla Della ran well in the second race, but was beaten by well-meant first-timer Cougarontheprowl. The exacta paid a juicy $24.50. Of course, wasn’t around to bet. Peace and Justice won the sixth at another juicy $20.40 and then in the seventh I liked Nooten, who finished second to favored Public Policy and not a bad exacta $11.90.

Oh, well, life gets in the way sometimes.

FIRST RACE: 1. Congregationalist, 2. Cinco de Mario, 3. Fighting On. LONG SHOT: Broker Brett.

SECOND RACE: 1. Magic Mark, 2. Roman Tizzy, 3. Brave Act. LONG SHOT: Mr Lemon Tree.

ROMAN TIZZY and MR LEMON TREE are first-time geldings. MAGIC MARK comes out of a key race.

THIRD RACE: 1. Too Fast to Pass (best bet), 2. Money Cannon, 3. Ranulf. LONG SHOT: Sidepocket Champ.

TO FAST TO PASS, a 4-year-old gelding, was claimed off of trainer Peter Miller by trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, who is also co-owner. Hollendorfer is 37% first off the claim and moves this one up the ladder. He gets Rafael Bejarano to ride and they are a 48% winning proposition from 66 races the last two years at Santa Anita.

FOURTH RACE: 1. Keeneland Kitten, 2. Cleardofallcharges, 3. Rambling House. LONG SHOT: Vegas Street.

FIFTH RACE: 1. Princess Genevieve, 2. Euroclydon, 3. Papa’s Flashy Girl. LONG SHOT: Turn On.

This could be a big day for Hollendorfer. Here he stretches out the 3-year-old filly PRINCESS GENEVIEVE on the turf from six furlongs to one mile. By Whatsthescript, she was crying out for more room last time as the 3-1 favorite. Hollendorfer gets Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith to ride and they are 67% (2-of-3) at Santa Anita the last two years.

SIXTH RACE: 1. Jovita’s Tuffy, 2. As Good as Gold, 3. Warren’s Tyler S. LONG SHOT: Nome.

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Monastic, 2. Power Foot, 3. Empty Headed. LONG SHOT: Black Spirit.

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Winninginfashion, 2. Amina Perfect, 3. Circular Logic. LONG SHOT: Unique Suances.
