Horse racing, Santa Anita

Updated Santa Anita picks for Saturday, Oct. 5

FIRST RACE: 1. Heyyoucan, 2. Tosheen, 3. Cajun Hippie. LONG SHOT: Z Z Way.

Trainer Peter Miller controls this race with both HEYYOUCAN and TOSHEEN. HEYYOUCAN broke its maiden at Del Mar coming from off the pace while TOSHEEN was up on the pace while winning at Fairplex Park. Check the odds for the better price and do an exacta box.

SECOND RACE (Swingtime Stakes): 1. Customer Base, 2. Magic Union, 3. Miss Pippa. LONG SHOT: Charm the Maker.

CUSTOMER BASE drops out of the Grade II Yellow Ribbon Hnadicap at Del Mar, where she finished fifth. Before that she was fourth to Tiz Flirtatious in the John C. Mabee. This race is a huge class relief and she gets jockey Gary Stevens for the first time.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Trial Spin, 2. Tama County, 3. Spirited Touch. LONG SHOT: Crawford the Crook.

TRIAL SPIN tries two turns for the first time and jockey Agapito Delgadillo decides to ride him instead of TAMA COUNTY. CRAWFORD THE CROOK ships in from Saratoga where he comes out of a key race where three horses have come back to win, but the outside post can be a killer at this distance.

==

FOURTH RACE (Grade II City of Hope Mile): 1. Obviously, 2. Barocci, 3. No Jet Lag. LONG SHOT: Polytechnicien.

Obviously someone is going to have to catch OBVIOUSLY. I don’t think it’s going to happen.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Drover Crazy, 2. Magic Daddy, 3. Well Lawyered. LONG SHOT: Snaps.

Trainer Ron Ellis and jockey Victor Espinoza could have a big day as they are teamed up several times on the card with live mounts. DROVER CRAZY, a 3-year-old gelding, has been facing some toughies like Wild Dude, Everton and Declassify. He comes out of one of the fastest Del Mar maiden races of the entire meet. Seems to need to show a little more speed over this track than his last. Has the highest last race Beyer.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. A TOAST TO YOU (best bet), 2. Koast, 3. Depreciable. LONG SHOT: Mr. Bossy Pants.

Jockey Edwin Maldonado had his choice of several in this race and settles on A TOAST TO YOU, a 4-year-old gelding trained by Peter Miller. The son of Tribal Rule drops to his lowest level in along time, looking to get his first win of 2013. He is third off the layoff and has won on the Santa Anita green before.

==

SEVENTH RACE (L.A. Woman Stakes): 1. Executiveprivilege, 2. Socialbug, 3. Teddy’s Promise. LONG SHOT: Conkate.

Trainer Bob Baffert controls this race with Grade I winner EXECUTIVEPRIVILEGE and the undefeated/up-and-coming SOCIALBUG. This is one tough race.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Key Vista, 2. Midnight Lady, 3. Cotton’s Point. LONG SHOT: Madoffwiththemoney.

Surprise, Baffert has another tough one here in KEY VISTA. The 4-year-old filly broke her maiden by 9½ lengths last December so chances are Baffert will have her ready to win second time out if her injury didn’t slow her down.

==

NINTH RACE (Grade I Santa Anita Sprint Championship): 1. Gonna Fly Now, 2. Points Offthebench, 3. Trinniberg. LONG SHOT: Roman Threat.

GONNA FLY NOW is the only true closer in a field full of speed demons. Most of these are trying to punch their tickets to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. POINTS OFFTHEBENCH was impressive at Del Mar and TRINNIBERG is the defending BC Sprint chamo.

==

10th RACE: 1. Blameitonthecat, 2. Cal Gal, 3. Savings Account. LONG SHOT: Loufoque.

Two-year-olds going down the hill should provide some intrigue. Trainer John Sadler claimed BLAMEITONTHECAT at Del Mar and she is bred to love the turf. Sadler puts leading jockey Rafael Bejarano aboard the daughter of Cowtown Cat.
