Updated Del Mar picks for Friday, Aug. 9

FIRST RACE: 1. Toledo Eddie, 2. Free Time, 3. Exotic Slew. LONG SHOT: Star Rocker.

TOLEDO EDDIE had a ton of trouble in his last race and now drops back from a mile to 5 furlongs on the turf. Trainer Craig Dollase and jockey Victor Espinoza are a solid combination.

SECOND RACE: 1. Katy’s Star, 2. Bluegrass Ellie, 3. Economy of Motion. LONG SHOT: Jesse’s Giacomo.

KATY’S STAR closed good ground during a period at the seaside oval when it was hard to do so. The track seems fairer this week and her style just might work at 6½ furlongs on the Polytrack. It doesn’t hurt that leading jockey Rafael Bejarano sticks around.

THIRD RACE: 1. Behind the Bossman, 2. Heyyoucan, 3. Znelle. LONG SHOT: Silent Ruler.

BEHIND THE BOSSMAN showed speed first time out and Bejarano jumps on for the red hot Doug O’Neill barn. All O’Neill has done this week is win five times. The Boss also takes the all important drop from straight maidens to maiden claiming.

FOURTH RACE: 1. Olympic Blue, 2. Matto Mondo, 3. Bipartisan. LONG SHOT: Casa de Cambio.

OLYMPIC BLUE drops out of the second division of the opening day Oceanside Stakes. He takes on older horses for the first time and might enough the extra furlong.

FIFTH RACE: 1. NEXTDOORNEIGHBOR (best bet), 2. Gallant Gent, 3. Plenny of Henny. LONG SHOT: Private Bounty.

NEXTDOORNEIGHBOR was claimed last time out by trainer Ron Ellis, something Ellis doesn’t do often. However, when he does he wins 44 percent first off the claim.

SIXTH RACE: 1. Jeanne Marini, 2. Amanda, 3. Full of Spice. LONG SHOT: Rockin Girl.

JEANNE MARINI showed plenty of speed on the class drop. She also has a big work over the Polytrack which could be a winning formula. Watch the toteboard action on first-timer Rockin Girl because she had a big work over the surface late last month.

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Tasty Treat, 2. Kinz Funky Monkey, 3. Belle de Lune. LONG SHOT: Plus One.

TASTY TREAT is a perfect 2-for-2 over this 5-furlong turf course. There are no secrets here. Bejarano will go to the front and see if anyone goes with her.

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Sophie’s Secret, 2. Beautiful Spirit, 3. Kevin’s Kool Kat. LONG SHOT: Tony’s Pinguini’s.

Interesting race here. SOPHIE’S SECRET drops into a maiden claimer for the first time. She has a big work over the track and trainer John Sadler puts 10-pound apprentice jockey B. Pena on board. Smells to me like the rookie is going to go to the front and try to win his first race.
