Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella stole show on Wednesday at Del Mar.
Mandella, who had just 19 victories for the year, won three times and appears to have a pair of stakes horses in Indy Point and Station House.
Station House, a 2-year-old colt by Rock Hard Ten, was sensational in winning the third race, a one mile test on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course.
With Gary Stevens aboard, Station House will be one to watch the rest of the year in 2-year-olds stakes races on the turf.
Stevens was also the rider of Indy Point , which won the Wickerr, for fun as the seventh race. Indy Point is a 4-year-old from Argentina and was very impressive in winning at a mile on the turf course. He finished in 1:32.74. The course record is 1:32.10.
Indy Point can be pointed to any number of important grass races around the country. Maybe it’s not too late to run in the Arlington Million.
As for the Del Mar Polytrack, it seemed as if the inside was the place to still be for most of the riders, but at least some horses were coming from off the pace.
The one sad part of the day was an injury to Corporate Jungle in the Wickerr. He suffered an injury to his left front sesamoid, according to a track spokesman. The horse was taken back to the barn, where X-rays were to be taken to see if the 5-year-old could be saved for breeding purposes.
