Del Mar picks for Wednesday, July 24

Since all anyone cares about is the Pick 6 carryover, we’ll skip the commentary on the first two races, but watch those races very carefully before putting in your Pick 6 ticket. There was a definite inside speed bias last week. However, if the weather warms up today look for the rally wide types to regain the upper hand.

FIRST RACE: 1. Cotton’s Point, 2. Sophie’s Secret, 3. Cravin’ the Heat. LONG SHOT: Miracle Merger.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Captain Corrigan, 2. Penny Maker, 3. Change of Plan. LONG SHOT: El Sabios.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. TAELYNS PRINCE (best bet), 2. Station House, 3. Sunny Kat. LONG SHOT: Settheworldonfire.

The 2-year-olds hit the turf going around two turns for the first time in Southern California. There aren’t enough of these races. TAELYNS PRINCE is by English Channel and finished a good second first time out. He is bred to love the distance. STATION HOUSE is a first-timer from the Richard Mandella barn, which has scored in the past with this move. SUNNY KAT is by Kitten’s Joy and we know the Joys all love the turf, but the post is a problem here. SETTHEWORLDONFIRE and BE YOU are long shots to consider.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Iron Joe T, 2. Bev N Bud, 3. King Bill. LONG SHOT: Jim’s No Preacher.

IRON JOE T is dropping off the claim for Cody Autrey, who has already won three races at the meet after poor performances the last two years. Autrey and jockey Joe Talamo have finished first or second in four of their last five collaborations. BEV N BUD has a win over the Polytrack abd comes out of a key race. KING BILL drops for trainer Doug O’Neill who has gotten off to a slow start. JIM’S NO PREACHER comes in from New Mexico for red-hot trainer Pete Miller, who scored with this angle last week.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Ryleigh Ruler, 2. Sweet G, 3. Monstro Ness. LONG SHOT: Yvons Dixie Melody.

Tough race. If you can figure out who will have the lead going into the turn, you might have the winner. RYLEIGH RULER is by Roman Ruler, who is an early-win sire and his offspring like the Polytrack. I’m taking a wild swing here because trainer Roberto Diodoro is 0-for-5 with first-time starters at Del Mar. SWEET G drops in class off a trouble trip and might go better under Long Star Park apprentice Sigala. MONSTRO NESS showed speed in his debut, but must clear the field from the outside post.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. Bella Viaggia, 2. Ondine, 3. Sweet Lulu. LONG SHOT: Ticket to Broadway.

BELLA VIAGGIA was a perfect 2-for-2 over the Del Mar Poly last year and comes off a win in her 2013 debut. Leading jockey Rafael Bejarano jumps off undefeated SWEET LULU to ride ONDINE for trainer Bob Baffert. TICKET TO BROADWAY is part of that Miller/New Mexico connection.

==

SEVENTH RACE (The Wickerr): 1. Corporate Jungle, 2. My Best Brother, 3. Indy Point. LONG SHOT: Hudson Landing.

Trainer Tom Proctor came through for us on Sunday with Wishing Gate and he tries here again with CORPORATE JUNGLE. The 5-year-old loves this distance and just missed winning in his 2013 debut at Arlington Park. MY BEST BROTHER won the Del Mar Derby here last summer and makes his first start of 2013. INDY POINT drops out of a key Grade I race in Argentina, but trainer Richard Mandella is 0-for-4 with first-time North American starters. HUDSON LANDING has two wins over the course, but this is a way tougher spot.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Indycott, 2. Will He Amaze, 3. Tuckers Point. LONG SHOT: Rocabar.

INDYCOTT is dropping into a maiden claimer for the first time for Mandella, who hits 38% with this move. This son of A.P. Indy is bred to run all day, but seems strange for Mandella to give up on one like this so soon. I know some people think this is a single in the Pick 6, but not for me. WILL HE AMAZE is also dropping into a MC for the first time and has had trouble at the start in both of his starts. TUCKERS POINT just missed at this level for Talamo and Autrey, but the post is a bit on an issue here. ROCABAR is by Pulpit and drops in class.
