Del Mar picks for Saturday, July 20

FIRST RACE: 1. Rocky Barboa, 2. Shining Son, 3. Orangeyouacutie. LONG SHOT: Surf N Ski

Until Del Mar’s speed bias from the last two days is a thing of the past, you have to look for speedsters. ROCKY BARBOA broke his maiden while showing speed and let’s hope he can open up here.

SECOND RACE: 1. Shackbamalama, 2. Avare, 3. Imperative. LONG SHOT: Magic Channel.

We’re shooting for the moon here with this 20-1 bomber from the Cerin barn. Two things of interest here: Cerin jumps this 3-year-old colt up in class —- always a good sign —- and Cerin is a 38 percent turf trainer at Del Mar per Jim Mazur’s Progressive Handicap stats.

THIRD RACE: 1. Star Vesta, 2. Pure Blush, 3. Bonita Star. LONG SHOT: Long Legged Lovely.

Jockey Rafael Bejarano and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer have been a good team for years and STAR VESTA could be ready off the layoff.

FOURTH RACE: 1. Fonz, 2. Sizzlin’ Joe, 3. East Sky. LONG SHOT: Slammer Time.

Here they are again: Bejarano and Hollendorfer. FONZ makes the third start of his career and first around two turns. The No. 8 post is no bargain, but thinking is Rafael can make it work.

FIFTH RACE (Osunitas Stakes): 1. Unusual Hottie, 2. Top Kisser, 3. Closing Range. LONG SHOT: Closing Range.

Jockey Joe Talamo has been in a huge slump without a victory in more than a week, but maybe UNUSUAL HOTTIE can break him out of it. She has a win over with course and likes to come from off the pace on the turf.

SIXTH RACE: 1. Global View, 2. Southern Freedom, 3. Guns Loaded. LONG SHOT: Shakahari.

This 2-year-old open maiden race is wide open so pay attention to the toteboard to see who is getting bet. They are all first-timers.

SEVENTH RACE: 1. IMWITHTHEBLONDE (Best bet), 2. Heat Trap, 3. Hail Mary. LONG SHOT: What a Spot.

IMWITHTHEBLONDE sees trainer John Sadler employ Bejarano off the layoff. Looks like a winner.

EIGHTH RACE (Grade I Eddie Read): 1. Middie, 2. Fed Biz, 3. Lucayan. LONG SHOT: Sofast.

Trainer Phil Oliver has come West with a small string for the first time and MIDDIE is part of that group. The 5-year-old gelding finished third to Wise Dan two races back. If he can keep that form, he might be tough here.

NINTH RACE: 1. Sandys Diamond, 2. Rock This Way, 3. Fair Dinkum. LONG SHOT: Joe Carl.

SANDYS DIAMOND ships in from Emerald Downs and is searching for his level. Having Gary Stevens along for the ride doesn’t hurt.

10TH RACE: 1. Somewhere With You, 2. Patriotic Lion, 3. Thrills and Chills. LONG SHOT: Affirmed Arch.

There’s that man Bejarano riding again on SOMEWHERE WITH YOU.
