Del Mar picks Friday, July 19

FIRST RACE: 1. Distant Image, 2. Our Heat, 3. Camelia Rose. LONG SHOT: Secret Cove.

Trainer Vladimir Cerin can hit with turf horses and jockey Julian Leparoux can ride the green stuff. Sounds like a perfect match for DISTANT IMAGE.

==

SECOND RACE: 1. Space Runner, 2. Wild Tony, 3. Luz Atticus. LONG SHOT: Bubba Fizz.

SPACE RUNNER comes from the Northern California fair circuit and NoCal horses have been doing very well the first few days of the meet. Plus, jockey Rafael Bejarano jumps aboard.

==

THIRD RACE: 1. Field Report, 2. Free Time, 3. My Slew. LONG SHOT: Door’s Open.

FIELD REPORT just missed in his debut on the turf last time out with jockey Mike Smith. The 5-year-old gelding should press the pace and be right there at the wire.

==

FOURTH RACE: 1. Proud Bok, 2. Hard Buns, 3. J K’s Mischief. LONG SHOT: Magic Number.

PROUD BOK is another NoCal shipper for owners Gary and Cecil Barber, who like to cash a bet. Trainer John Sadler puts apprentice Sigala aboard, which might be trying to go wire-to-wire.

==

FIFTH RACE: 1. Beth’s My Babe, 2. Hot Bride, 3. Tribal Tattoo. LONG SHOT: Water Issues.

Bejarano jumps on this 2-year-old filly for Mike Machowsky. BETH’S MY BABE puts blinkers on. Bejarano did well Thursday going to the front and not looking back. That might be the game plan here, too.

==

SIXTH RACE: 1. SURFCUP (Best bet), 2. Pure Loyalty, 3. Little Jerry. LONG SHOT: Brother Pete.

SURFCUP just beat Gervinho in the Silky Sullivan at Golden Gate. A;; Gervinho did on opening day was win a division of the Oceanside Stakes.

==

SEVENTH RACE: 1. Harlington’s Rose, 2. Sprouts, 3. Say’s Who. LONG SHOT: Time for Angie.

SPROUTS will be a heavy favorite, but we’re going to go with HARLINGTON’S ROSE, who might be improving off her maiden win.

==

EIGHTH RACE: 1. Major Affair, 2. Brannaman, 3. Spotted Owl. LONG SHOT: Raise Ten.

MAJOR AFFAIR drops into a claiming race for the first time, which is always a key handicapping angle. Not sure what to make of the Sadler first-time starters, RAISE TEN and STREET CHOIR, but it might not hurt to throw $2 on them if they are big prices.
